Inghams diverts 90 percent of waste from landfill

Inghams, one of Australia’s leading food processors and manufacturers, is increasing its beneficial reuse of waste.
With Transpacific’s help, Inghams is increasing its beneficial reuse of waste by 16 percent and diverting 90 percent of total waste from landfill.
Jan Gebraad, Plant Manager for Ingham’s Murarrie facility in South East Queensland, said the facility creates a high percentage of organic waste as part of its manufacturing process.
“By working closely with Transpacific, much of our organic waste is now processed and made into compost rather than going to landfill.
“This means our business has dramatically reduced its environmental footprint, helping us to become a more environmentally sustainable business,” he said.
Inghams staff are proudly embracing the recycling push.
New starters are provided with induction materials to educate them about recycling on site. Posters and bin stickers are also available, using highly visible and easy to read instructions and symbols.
Transpacific provides Inghams with reporting tools to track waste streams to help the company make informed decisions.
Monthly reports detail waste disposed to landfill and outlines which wastes are beneficially reused.
Inghams recycles much of its cardboard, paper, packaging and other general waste streams using Transpacific’s Harvest program, bolstering the company’s beneficial reuse of waste by 16 percent.
Jan said: “Transpacific’s unique waste minimisation approach was the defining factor when we selected them as our waste management partner more than 12 months ago,” he said.
Inghams is a large and significant contributor to the food industry. The company has more than 8,000 employees and operates in all Australian states and New Zealand.
